Protection & Advocacy, Inc. (PAI) is a federally
mandated nonprofit advocacy agency that works people
with disabilities to Advance their human and legal
rights. PAI advocacy is intended to change the system
so that it values diversity, culture and each individual;
to create a barrier free, inclusive world where people
with disabilities enjoy equality, dignity, power,
and independence and have access to supports chosen
and directed by the person with a disability. Services
available from PAI include: Information and referral;
peer and self-advocacy; representation in administrative
and judicial proceedings; investigation of abuse and
neglect; legislative advocacy; and training.

(CAIC) is one of the leading consumer and family based
advocacy organization in California dedicated to furthering
the rights and dignity of people and families affected
by developmental disabilities.
The Arc of California

The Arc of California, founded in 1954, is the largest
family based organization in California dedicated
to improving the quality of life for people with developmental
disabilities. Arc was one of the original organizations
that sponsored and fought for the Lanterman Developmental
Disabilities Services Act (1969) which embodied the
state’s obligation to minimize institutionalization
by supporting people to live in integrated community
settings.

center in disability civil rights. DREDF was founded
in 1979 by a unique alliance of adults with disabilities

The Three Bay Area Regional
Centers:
The Bay Area regional centers and their community
partners will be responsible for assuring appropriate
supports and services for the people with developmental
disabilities moving from Agnews Developmental Center
to community based programs in the Bay Area. Regional
Centers are private, non-profit corporations under
contract with the California Department of Developmental
Services to plan, advocate, and coordinate services
and supports for people with developmental disabilities.
